Regexp versus regex

The Perl source sometimes uses 'regexp' and sometimes 'regex'. I think that
'regexp' is slightly in the lead with slightly more occurrences, plus things
like regexp.h or $LAST_REGEXP_CODE_RESULT. But a case could be made for
either.

Is there any interest in standardizing the documentation, at least, to have
one or the other abbreviation? I have some patches in progress but I
appreciate that these global changes can be awkward. Ideally error message
strings would also change (they too use a mixture).
